Precious

Precious is a dark bay 8 yr old mare·who was rounded upat 4 years old in Sulphur Springs Utah in 2008 in a massive removal from the HMA deemed as an “emergency removal” of over 300 horses. In 2010 she was adopted by her first adopter and from there on all we know is that she appears to have been never handled or groomed and was sold to a kill buyer in PA in late January 2012 only 2 months after the adopter received title for her from BLM.·Precious was dropped off at the kill pen with the skin either burned or scraped off the inside of her left hind leg and thigh, and a gash on the other hind leg, filthy and mucky wearing a halter that had started to grow into her face. Precious shows signs of abuse, fears human contact and is still “wild”. Precious is a “jumper” and can jump tall pens in a single bound! She jumped out of the pens in the kill buyer lot several times.

Precious went from the kill pen to a trainer from Feb to the end of May for gentling, courtesy of a sponsor. However, Precious did not want to be trained or gentled. Precious was offered sanctuary in June but the trip was postponed several times due to the extreme heat throughout the entire route to sanctuary and was eventually cancelled until the fall. ·

We had NO safe place for her to go to and she couldn’t be handled safely. The trainer stepped up to the plate for Precious and “fostered” her free of charge at his farm since then giving her a safe place to live while waiting for her turn to go to freedom.·

Her feet were and still are severely overgrown and will need several trims to help get them back to where they should be. (We planned on getting her feet done but the trainer has never been able to get to touch Precious and we could not find a chute to do any maintenance on her feet. teeth or shots etc.)·

Rosie, 12 yrs old & Sparky 9 yrs old were sold together at 2 separate kill buyer auctions in Lancaster County, PA in late May 2012. At the first auction a woman who was said to be their owner described each horse and their capabilities. Rosie was her husbands favorite pet and now he had passed on and she wanted them to go to good homes and hoped that the new owner would stay in contact with her and let her know how they were doing. Rosie was trained to ride she said and loved attention and lots of grooming.

Sparky was said to be trained to drive but was a very nervous horse and needed Rosie nearby to keep her calm. Sparky did stop at all the red light she noted but was a little slow to move on when the light turned green. The horses had recently been wormed. The woman gave a hand written note to the auctioneer ·that was to go to the new owner(s). This particular auction is run by a well known kill buyer in the community and horses are regularly shipped to slaughter from this auction. They were both sold after the woman finished speaking to by bid to another well known kill buyer. We purchased them from the second kill buyer. When both ·horses were in the second kill buyer lot, Sparky was said to be “wild” and kept in a chute like pen. Unfortunately they did not heed the instructions at the lot and did not keep them together in the pens.

Rosie was captured from the Jackson Mountains HMA in NV on 02/03/2003 ·at 2 yrs old and Sparky was born at the BLM Fallon Maintenance Facility in NV on 08/01/2003. Sparky was adopted to a person from ·WV at a Washington, PA adoption event on 08/15/2004 and Rosie was adopted in July 2005.It appears that Sparky was sold or given to the individual in PA sometime after she was titled since they both had the same owner at the auctions who said they had owned both since 2005.

Rosie and Sparky are up to date on shots, teeth and feet....except Sparky who kicked the farrier after he did her front feet and hurt his arm. We had to make another appointment with the vet there so she could sedate her for the back. I was not present as it took place in VA last week but Sparky exploded when she was jabbed in the neck with the needle and the vet was hurt. The vet is ok. She did break her arm but she is ok. Therefor Sparky did NOT get her BACK feet done which are atrocious. (Sparky is the little one!)

The Mustang Freedom Foundation rescued all 3 with the help of generous folks who donated towards their fees and transport to foster homes. Our goal is not to place wild horses back in the same kind of situation they came from when we found them. Sanctuary for them is indeed a blessing!

Thank you both so much for giving them a chance to be who they were born to be.

With deepest gratitude,

Carol
